Mission Statement Beth El Religious School, which is affiliated with the Conservative movement, is a supplementary educational program for children from Gan (kindergarten) through Confirmation (grade 10). In a rich learning environment, that is dedicated to their moral and spiritual well being, students explore and develop a strong, positive Jewish identity grounded in the study of Torah, T’fillah (prayer) and Gemilut Hasadim (acts of kindness). Beth El Religious School, in partnership with its families, nurtures, motivates and inspires its students to pursue a life-long commitment to Jewish learning, the practice of Mitzvot, the continuity of Klal Yisrael (the Jewish people), and a deep attachment to the State of Israel.

Begin phonetic decoding skills, learn many prayers and blessings, explore being Jewish and continue their enrichment of Bible & holidays.

In the course of the four years in the elementary department, our students learn the Shabbat morning service , Torah Service, and Kabbalat Shabbat and Ma’ariv (evening) Service, perfect their Hebrew reading, increase their Hebrew vocabulary, gain a deeper understanding of G-d, Bible, Jewish holidays and mitzvot and Israel.
Music – Music is an important component of the curriculum for both the Mechina and Elementary departments and is offered weekly. The children learn a variety of Hebrew, English and liturgical songs and nigunim or melodies that are related to Shabbat, the holidays, the siddur and Israel
Rites of Passage -Two important rites of passage occur at both beginning and end of the elementary years:
Chag HaSiddur and Consecration Service, a memorable ceremony taking place on a Shabbat morning in March of the Third Grade year, celebrates the milestone event of our children receiving their first siddur.
Chag HaSiyyum (Elementary Graduation), a beautiful ceremony celebrating the transition from Elementary to Hebrew High School

Family Education
Family B’Yachad (together)Programs - A series of programs for children in K – 6th and their parents which focus on the theme of the year. This year’s theme is Tefillah, prayer. Each grade would focus on a different prayer. In addition to the educational component, each of the programs will also have an artistic component to them. Families will be able to create heirloom type projects that revolve around the theme of the program.
Some of the highlights include:
o Shema is for Living – a 4th Grade program that would revolve on the theme of the Shema Prayer. The project would be a mezuzah.
o Tzitzit: The Ties that Bind Them –a 6th Grade program that would revolve around the prayer “Vayomer” and would entail either the making of a tzitzit.
o Shabbat in a Box – a Kindergarten program that would revolve around the prayers for Shabbat and would involve a project for Shabbat.
o Yad LaTorah – a 5th Grade program dealing with the Torah Service and involving making a beautiful “Yad” for the Torah.
Bar / Bat Mitzvah Headed by Hazzan, Alisa Pomerantz-Boro, our program affords our B’nai Mitzvah and their families opportunities to participate fully in a variety of programs that enhance their special day.
Project Mitzvah 13
The Mitzvah 13 Program, coordinated by Rabbi Jeffery Arnowitz and Hazzan Alisa Pomerantz-Boro, is a way to really fulfill the mitzvah part of your Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Our rabbis taught that, ”The world is sustained on three things: On Torah, On Worship and On Deeds of Kindness.” As a participant in Mitzvah 13, you will perform four mitzvot from each one of those categories. We have a whole booklet of ideas for mitzvot in each category. The thirteenth mitzvah will be reading from the Torah or chanting the Haftorah at your Bar or Bat Mitzvah.
At your Bar or Bat mitzvah, as you complete Project Mitzvah 13, Rabbi Arnowitz will make a special presentation of a certificate and a gift in recognition of your great accomplishment. This is a project that will make your bar mitzvah a more meaningful event and serve as a great introduction to just how fun and easy it is to do mitzvot.
Tallit and T’fillin on Sunday Morning
All B’nai Mitzvah candidates and their families will attend a six week session of tallit and tefillin Sunday mornings. Each session will include breakfast, a tutorial in putting on your tallit and tefillin during a brief service and an in-depth lesson in a subject that will help prepare you for the actual Bar/Bat Mitzvah day. Topics to be covered will include The Torah and the Haftorah – what are we reading anyway?, What do you mean son of a mitzvah?, Getting comfortable with the siddur and the service, maintaining a Jewish identity after the Bar/Bat Mitzvah and others. The dates and times of each six week session will be announced with the Hebrew School calendar
Bar/Bat Mitzvah and Beyond
The Bar/Bat Mitzvah and Beyond parent study program is a two part mini-course for parents in preparation for the big event. At the sessions we will discuss our philosophy of what Bar Mitzvah is all about, not just what takes place but why it is so significant in a young person’s life. Together we will share a spiritual vocabulary with which you can discuss important Jewish values with your child. We will also look at how to write a D’var Torah with your child. The D’var Torah is a chance for you and your child to study the Torah portion in English and then work together to write a short speech that explains the portion, to be delivered at his or her service. We will also look at Tzedakah ideas, acts of kindness and concern that can be included in your planning for the invitations, the service and the reception.
And…
While you’re studying with the Rabbi, your children will work on an important tzedakah project that will be both meaningful and fun.

Welcome Back!
Meet and Greet Your Child’s Teacher and a Welcome Back Picnic- Sunday, September 7th
Religious School will begin the year on Sunday, September 7th with a special program – a Meet and Greet the Teachers followed by a Family Picnic. Regular classes will NOT take place on that Sunday. Children and parents will arrive at 10:30 AM for the program. Parents will be told via mail which classrooms to attend. Teachers will greet both parents and children and present their plans for the year. Where there is more than one teacher, parents and children will visit the second classroom as well. Afterwards, everyone is invited to the first “welcome back family picnic” to be held outside (or in the Beit Midrash if it rains.)
Thank you Men’s Club for sponsoring the picnic and Membership Committee for looking after the details.
Project Lev Says Good Bye to Morah Sarah and Hello to Morah Lisa!
After four wonderful and productive years, Sarah Lerner, Project Lev’s second coordinator, resigned to spend more time with her own children and family. Sarah was much beloved by the children and parents of Project Lev and will be terribly missed. Luckily, we have hired a new professional, Lisa Davis-Pikunas, who will not only assume the position as Project Lev Coordinator, but will also oversee the Special Needs program at BERS, including our Hebrew Resource/ Enrichment Room and newly formed Madregot Program for children who need more support than that which is provided in our resource room.
Beth El Religious School Welcomes New Staff
We welcome new additions to our staff... B’hatzlacha!
Sharona Ron new Hey (5th Grade) teacher is also new to Cherry Hill and has previously taught at Abrams Academy.
Orly Kalimi, new Bet (2nd Grade) Sunday teacher, has been with Kellman Academy for several years.
Dorit Pe’er, new Vav (6th Grade) teacher on Sundays and Tuesdays, is not really new but has been with us in the Hebrew Resource department this past year.
We wish all our new staff much luck (hatzlacha) in the coming year!
Rosh Hodesh: It’s A Girl Thing! First Meeting September 21
We are delighted to announce that thanks to the generosity of our Sisterhood, Congregation Beth El has launched Rosh Hodesh: It’s A Girl Thing!, a nationally recognized, award winning program for adolescent girls in 6th – 12th Grade. It is a contemporary monthly celebration of the ancient New Moon (Rosh Hodesh) holiday that builds girls’ self-esteem, leadership skills, and Jewish identity in fun, intimate monthly gatherings, facilitated by a knowledgeable, fully-trained, dynamic Jewish woman.
Young girls today are constantly being bombarded by and targeted by an unhealthy culture of sexist, body-consciousness and consumerism that sanctions and glorifies risky behavior. Rosh Hodesh: It’s A Girl Thing! strives to combat these messages by using Jewish teachings and engaging activities to empower adolescent girls to navigate the life issues they care about most, including body image, stress, popularity, friendship, romantic relationships, and family.
We are pleased to announce that Rachel Collik, former Beth El Confirmand and Hebrew High School teacher, will facilitate Rosh Hodesh: It’s A Girl Thing! beginning with the first meeting on September 21st for girls in Grades six and seventh. Depending on registration, (first come first serve for a group that is no more than fifteen girls,) we are prepared to open a second group, with a group leader waiting in the wings. For more information on how to register for this program, please contact Yaffa Fuchs, yfuchs@bethelsnj.org.
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Shalem Institute Back!
You should have all gotten your High Holiday information by now and have all made your reservation for your children in Grades 1 – 7 for the Shalem Institute 2008. Once again, in addition to an age appropriate service, those children who pre-register will have a fun-filled, age appropriate learning experience with a qualified teacher on Both days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur from 10:30 AM – 1:30 PM. Children in Grades 1 – 3 will begin with a High Holiday Service from 10:30 – 12:00, and then those who have pre-registered will attend the special classes until 1:30. Children in Grades 4-7 will begin with class (pre-registration required) and follow with a service at 12:00.
There will also be a Teen Service on all three days that will incorporate t’fillah and discussion for students in Grades 8 – 12.
Kudos to Melissa Tinkelman, Co Chairman of the Beth El Religious School and Cheryl Hanover for helping us coordinate the Shalem Institute during the High Holy Days. We couldn’t do it without their help and the help of the wonderful volunteers they recruit.
Beth El Religious School is Going Digital
I am happy to inform you that Larry Abrams will be joining Darim Online Learning Network for Educators, a group of 13 educators across the country who are taking part in a pilot program that is designed to engage teachers in using new media to facilitate learning. In this significant pilot program Larry and I will join the Darim Network’s virtual community through collective learning and collaboration. Larry will need to commit approximately two to four hours a month to the community in addition to time spent on developing projects.
This is very exciting stuff and I am looking forward to Larry bringing us his new ideas throughout the year. As a way to launch this initiative, Larry will be presenting a workshop entitled, "Technology in Motion: Energizing Your Jewish Classroom," Thursday, September 4th, 7:00 – 8:00 PM, right after our opening staff meeting (4:00 – 6:00 PM) and dinner (6:00 – 7:00 PM.)
And from C.A.J.E. in Vermont...
I am also happy to report that Gloria Anderson has attended this year’s CAJE Conference at the University of Vermont and will bring back lots of ideas on her return. Gloria is also on the curriculum committee and has been busy working on a t’efillah vocabulary list for each grade level.
Chugim (clubs) Are Back!
Once again your children will have the opportunity to participate in informal Jewish education during regular school hours. They will be able to choose from a number of fun activities, such as, Children’s Choir, (Shira Chadasha,) Israeli Dancing, Judaica Arts & Crafts, Hebrew Ulpan, Torah Reading, Newspaper, Drama, Teva (Nature) and our newest, Gadna (Army Training.) We plan to have two, five or six-week sessions during the year (we would have more, but we’re limited in space and time) where our children will choose their ‘chug.’ After the first semester, children will be able to switch to another ‘chug.’ This year we will focus more on the Hebrew vocabulary and expressions that are associated with these chugim. Because the chugim will be multi-level, an added advantage is that our students will get to meet children from other classes that they normally don’t get to know.
Although the chugim are limited to children in grades Gimmel – Vav (3rd -6th,) we are welcome interested 2nd Graders into our Shira Chadasha (Beth El’s unique Children’s Choir.) Stay tuned for details.
Exciting Family B’Yachad (Together) Programs for the 2008-09 School Year
Construction blues won’t slow us down. Our Family B’Yachad programs promise to be every bit as exciting as they were last year. Last year we expanded our program to include a B’Yachad program for our Aleph Class, (1st Graders, Journey through the Four Questions. This year we will add a grogram to our Bet (2nd Grade) class sometime in February. The Family B’Yachad concept is quite simply this: children and parents learning together and creating everlasting memories as well as heirloom collectables. Our first Family B’Yachad program will be a 4th Grade special, Shema is for Living, November 23rd. Stay tuned for details.
We are Proud of our
B’nai Mitzvah of the Month
